This course is designed to equip preschool teachers with the necessary skills for effective teaching and planning.

Students who successfully complete all modules will be awarded the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Teaching by Learning Capital College. Students can proceed to pursue the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Leadership.

The Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Teaching is awarded by Learning Capital Collage and accredited by the Preschool Quality Accreditation Committee which is jointly steered by MOE and MCYS in Singapore.

Programme Objectives

  • Enable trainees to transfer educational/child developmental theories into practice which provide wide-ranging, multi-media and developmentally-appropriate learning experiences to young children
  • Enable trainees to be skillful in observation and to apply their knowledge of child development to design a learning environment that meets the needs of each individual child
  • Present to trainees with a variety of early childhood approaches which facilitate a creative and developmentally appropriate curriculum
  • Enable trainees to collaborate with fellow colleagues, parents and other professionals in supporting children's cognitive and affective development
  • Help trainees design, implement and evaluate learning environment and activities based on the curriculum framework and desired outcomes of preschool education

Module 1 : Principles and Practices in Early Childhood Care and Education

  • Philosophy and goals of early childhood care and education
  • Importance and value of early childhood care and education
  • Approaches and models of of early childhood care and education
  • The social dynamics of learning in the early childhood context
  • Overview of the early childhood care and education in Singapore
  • Desired outcomes of preschool education
  • Preschool education and the national education system in Singapore
  • Relationship between home, playgroup and child care centre/kindergarten
  • The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC)
  • The Code of Ethics - Guidelines for professinal responsibilites in early childhood care and education

Module 2 : Child Development and Learning (210 hours)

  • Growth & development in young children (0-8 years)
  • Understanding young children, children's behaviour and children with special needs
  • Observing young children
  • Assessing and evaluating children's development

Module 3 : Curriculum Planning and Pedagogy (460 hours)

  • Designing environments for young children
  • The language arts, mathematics, science, visual arts, performing arts, physical education, multicultural, and information & technology curriculum
  • Planning an integrated programme
  • Integrating children with special needs

Module 4 : Personal Growth and Professional Development: The Reflective Practitioner (100 hours)

  • Importance of networking and upgrading
  • Motivational theories
  • Communication, teambuilding, IT and counselling skills

Module 5 : Safety, Health, Hygiene and Nutrition (40 hours)

  • Importance of safety, health, hygience & nutrition
  • Early childhood illness & diseases
  • Observing safe & hygience practices
  • Maintaining a safe environment
  • Preparing healthy & nutritious meals
  • Child abuse at home & centre
  • Involving parents & the community in meeting safety, health, hygience & nutritional aspects in early years

Module 6 : Partnership with Families and the Community (60 hours)

  • Respect for diversity in a multicultural society
  • Understanding issues and problems faced by families in a multicultural society
  • Strategies for working with families and engaging parents on early childhood care and education
  • The Community as a resource

Module 7 : Supervised Teaching Practicum (300 hours)

  • Pre-practicum preparation
  • Learning journey
  • Field experience
  • Supervised practicum
  • Post practicum – summary of experience

Course Duration And Delivery

The course comprises of 7 modules conducted over 900 classroom hours and 300 practicum hours.
